Our Story

1994

A First Connection

In the spring of 1994, a delegation from Chateaubriant visited Athlone. The two towns shared much in common—similar in size, both inland, and each with a long history centered around their castles. The visit laid the foundation for what would soon become an official partnership.

1995

The Twinning Charter

In March 1995, the twinning charter was signed by Martine Burton and John Butler, formally linking Athlone and Chateaubriant. To make the partnership meaningful, Athlone’s town clerk, John Walsh, invited people from various backgrounds to get involved. Among them were Tom O’Connor, who became secretary, and John Daly, who took on the role of chairman.

A Shared Goal

The purpose of the twinning was clear: to strengthen European identity and bring the people of both towns closer together. This would be achieved through cultural, educational, industrial, musical, and sporting exchanges—creating real opportunities for collaboration and friendship.

Over the years, the committee has facilitated school exchange programs, work placements, industrial connections, and cultural celebrations. Athlone has been represented at Châteaubriant’s annual trade show and music festival, while French visitors have been welcomed for twinning visits, agricultural exchanges, and educational experiences.

Looking Ahead

As we look to the future, the Athlone Twinning Committee remains committed to strengthening the bond between Athlone and Châteaubriant. We will continue to foster cultural, educational, and community exchanges, creating new opportunities for collaboration and friendship. With upcoming anniversaries and ongoing projects, we are excited to build on our shared history and deepen the connections that make this partnership so special.
