Welcome to Châteaubriant

Châteaubriant is a commune in western France, located in the Loire-Atlantique department and it is part of historic Brittany. Châteaubriant is located 55 km south of Rennes and 70 km northeast of Nantes.

It is surrounded by a predominantly rural landscape, developed around its château, which was the scene of battles during the conflict between Brittany and France. It’s economy has long revolved around agriculture and livestock trading. It’s commercial role is symbolized by the almost thousand-year-old Béré Fair. The metal industry developed in the 19th century, followed by the plastics industry at the end of the following century.

A Town Shaped by Time

Châteaubriant is noteworthy for the Château de Châteaubriant, which combines a large medieval castle and a Renaissance palace. The town also has an 11th-century church and a medieval town centre, with half-timbered houses and remains of city walls. During the Second World War, Châteaubriant had a concentration camp, and it is known in France for the 27 hostages who were shot there in 1941.

In 2018, the population of Châteaubriant including 19 surrounding communes, had 33,961 inhabitants.
